Optimized Firefox 2.0 for G4, G5, and Intel Macs

Firefox theme

For those of you who somehow missed the news, the long-awaited release of Firefox 2.0 is finally here, and so are optimized builds!

There’s a bunch of new features and fixes in this release, so instead of repeating what’s already been said I’ll just point interested parties to the Firefox 2.0 release notes.

Why is the name / icon different?

firefoxI really shouldn’t have to keep repeating this, but every time I post a new Firefox release I still seem to get people annoyed / pissed off / confused as to why these builds are missing the Firefox name and icon. So here comes the strong emphasis:

The Firefox name and icon are copyrighted and cannot be used with non-official builds. These are non-official builds, so they cannot have the official branding. Pretty straight-forward. Please don’t ask me to build versions with the official branding.

So, without further ado…

Downloads

Make sure to choose the build that matches your processor. If you’re not sure what processor you have in your machine you can find out this information in the “About this Mac” window (Apple menu > About this Mac).

Previous download links removed. A newer version of Firefox is now available.

Recommended downloads

Here’s a small list of extensions and whatnot that I highly recommend:

  • Nightly Tester Tools: Every Firefox update means that some (if not all) of your extensions and themes break due to version incompatibility. This extension helps you to cajole extensions to work and helps baby firefoxes sleep well at night.
  • Pinstripe theme | Aronnax’s Firefox themes: One of the big “new features” of Firefox 2.0 is a “visual refresh”. (How many “times” can I do “air rabbit ears” in one paragraph?) Anyway, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but I personally don’t get it. For those of you that cringe when they see Firefox’s new duds these themes may prove to be the panacea you were looking for.
  • Tab Mix Plus: The new close tab buttons in Firefox 2.0 are a nice addition, but overall Firefox’s tab feature is still lacking that je ne sais quoi. (Does anyone else think the default Firefox tabs are too damn wide?) Tab Mix Plus makes Firefox’s tabs much more customizable and adds in a bunch of other nice features, too. This is a link to the development builds that are compatible with Firefox 2.0.
  • Stop and Reload extension: Toolbar space is at a premium. This extension combines the stop and reload button into one, ala Safari. You’ll need to use the Nightly Tester Tools above to install this one as it hasn’t been updated for Firefox 2.0 yet.
  • Fission: Puts the loading status indicator into the address bar ala Safari. I hated this when Safari was first released, but I’ve gotten used to it and now whenever I use a browser that doesn’t have this feature I miss it a lot.
  • Do you like this theme I’ve been working on? If there’s enough interest I’ll get it fixed up for Firefox 2.0 and post it for download.

Posts on “essential extensions to use with Firefox” are seemingly a dime a dozen these days, so I’ll end here. Feel free to post in the comments any feedback, thoughts, rants, praises, or anything else that comes to mind that is Firefox-related.

Enjoy, folks!

(Who wants to lay money on when Firefox 2.0.1 will be released?)

Post-Digg update: Jumping jehosaphat, people, you just burned through over 150 gigabytes of bandwidth in just over 5 hours. Yikes. More here.

I have the same problem with your build as I did with the official Firefox one - I get a message saying "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."

I don't have any other applications running, I restarted my computer... I can't think of what else to do. Help?

dagaz: try moving your Firefox folder out of the Application Support directory and then launching Firefox - your profile could be corrupted.

For those of you who want to know what's optimized: without getting into the nitty gritty too much, these builds were basically created using compiler flags that optimizes the Firefox source code for the specific CPU. Mozilla builds Firefox with more general settings to work across as many platforms (cpus) as possible.

For those of you who are interested, here are links to the mozconfig files I used for the Intel and G4 builds:

thanks! unfortunately this build - like the official 2.0 one - keeps crashing on my imac g5 (os x 10.3.9) when i add a bookmark and then click the top menu (in order to go to "manage bookmarks"). i had to go back to 1.5.0.7 because of this, and so far i have not found any other reports about this or a solution for that problem.

the other ff 2.0 "bug" i noticed (not tested with your build): apple-1, etc. is a good shortcut for switching between open tabs. with ff 2.0 this now does not work any more on some sites like youtube without having to click somewhere on each page first - which obviously makes this shortcut less useful.

but specially this bookmark/crash bug is a problem for me - anyone knows why this is happening/how it can be fixed...? (the mozilla forums seem not to be accessible, and there seems to be no easy way to submit a bugreport.)

It's a Chinese Webpage, the characters in the list and the buttons are displayed as "???", which is supposed to be normal characters as those in the webpage. However the original builds with "Aqua Firefox Set" works just OK.

May I ask for a solution? Since I am not master in this. Thanks so much!

Flash is broken in my download. I tried deleting all the flash plugins loaded in my system, but a reinstall of the universal flash player didn't help re-invigorate it like some others have suggested. Tom: Different optimizations and my builds have the aqua form widgets or Firefoxy widgets already applied. I don't believe some (or all) of those builds have the aqua form widgets, but I could be wrong.

Rich: The user agent is the default one that BonEcho builds with - I haven't changed it at all.

Matthew: Google Browser Sync might be worth looking into.

BenP: That's added in by the Nightly Tester Tool extension - check its preferences for how to turn off the build #.

Oh, and pardon my hubris, but WOO HOO, over 1000 digs!

I'm grateful for these G4-optimized and Aquafied builds -- but I'm temporarily stuck with 1.5.0.x, due to dependence on a different Session Manager (SessionSaver2) which is reported incompatible with FF2 (which I do want to move to), and which stored sessions cannot be inherited by Tab Mix Plus (which I also want to move to).

I'm wondering how much chance there might be of an Aquafied and G4-optimized build of the 1.5.0.7 which terminated that tree? I'm hoping, as I understand there to be some relatively significant stability patches relative to 1.5.0.6, and since there should be no further updates to plague you a few days later... ;-)

MacTed if you use the Nightly tester tools add-on you can turn off the version checking and run any extension you want. Although they are not garanteed to work 100%, lots of the extensions work it is just that the creators have not updated the file to say "it works with 2.0".

Oh and thanks so much for the G5 build.

I won't be using the Nightly Tester Tools, because I am really not that advanced an FF user, and prefer to keep things relatively simple and "as released" -- and because it has been my experience that plugin incompatiblity is usually proven true with such major rewrites as FF2 vs FF1.5...

The most troublesome extension I use is SessionSaver.2, which has been abandoned by its developer, after he declared that it was explicitly incompatible with FF2, but that its features had been written into FF2. Now that FF2 is out, it appears that SS.2's feature set is only partly incorporated, but the incompatibility is real (though perhaps not as severe as originally thought), without patching..

One person has produced a slightly patched version of SS.2 which at least allows the ability to reload saved sessions, which is the most important thing to me. Another person claims to have entirely recoded SS.2 for FF2, but was not able to figure out where/how to upload.

I will be testing the first of these shortly, with the G4-optimized build of FF2 -- wish me luck!

Your G4 build does not work on a G4 running OS 10.2.8. The program simply will not load. If your builds require 10.3.x or higher, you might want to mention that somewhere. By comparison, the general release of 2.0 downloaded from getfirefox.com works just fine on the same G4.

I second the request from Rich Blinne. Please add Firefox/2.0 to the user agent string, the default is only BonEcho/2.0 which causes problems with several sites such as Xbox.com and mail.yahoo.com (BETA).

I manually changed the value of general.useragent.extra.firefox to Firefox/2.0

Thanks for the great build! It runs much faster and smoother than the default build.

Sorry but it is Really really unstable and extremely strong BUGGY strong on my imac G5, as is the regular version of FF 2. Have to force quit both to get out, lots of problems for me.

Going back to 1.5 until improved/all the many many many bugs fixed.

Love it, much faster than the official build but cannot play any Flash content.

Any hints?

One "bug" i have encounter is when used with the "PDF Browser Plugin" from "Schubert|it". The "open in Acrobat reader" (diamond shaped) does not work.

Very nice work. Any chance you could compile a similar version for Thunderbird?

I don't know if this has anything to do with your build, but every so often FF will start to get really slow and reaches something like 400 MB of my 512 MB of memory and 90% CPU. I'm running a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo.

Two bugs (not sure if they've already been mentioned), sometimes when opening a new window, refresh button (and less commonly, the stop button) aren't there. There are horizontal lines in their places. You have to hover the mouse over the spots for them to come back. Also, sometimes I can't type anything in a text box, and have to close and reopen the window for it to work. Other than that, thanks so much, I'm loving this browser!

Hey! Great job!

I just have one question - why does it say the (Build 00000000000) on the header - next to Bon Echo, and how can I take it off?

Never mind Pinstripe and GrApple... what theme are you using in your screenshot? I'm looking for a Firefox 2.0 theme that plays nice with the Milk theme for ShapeShifter.

I've gone through the bundle and have been pretty successful @ turning these builds into FireFox look alikes (I love the widgets, btw.) Here's what you do:

Open (show package contents) the Bon Echo package
Edit info.plist
- Change "CFBundleGetInfoString" to read "Firefox 2.0, © 1998-2006 Contributors"
- Change "CFBundleName" to read "Firefox"
- Copy "document.icns" from Firefox bundle to contents/resources
- copy "firefox.icns" from Firefox bundle to contents/resources
- edit user agent (as specified in the blog)

Hey Neil, Just had a look at your theme for firefox. Looks
Cool....but why should Firefox try to look like Safari?
I think that a whole new original theme that would distinguish your Firefox builds from any other browser would be even COOLER. ;) Cheers and Merry Christmas. Tex

Camino can't use Firefox extensions. If you don't care about extensions, give Camino a whirl.

Wow, very fast!

Also, that theme is great. Having that usable would solve all my old complaints about FireFox (slowness, which has been fixed here, and ugliness).

I am getting the same "can't type" in any field problem. Opening a new window may solve the problem.

The frequency of the problem has increased from occasional to regularly.

I have the same problem as Philip. The extension worked for two days, after that it will clear the window and not display anything. I tried to uninstall mozilla, delete the profile and extensions and reinstall, but no luck :(
